CDI Regional Meeting

The Careers Development Institute [CDI] held its inaugural South East regional meeting on Monday 16th March at the Innovation Centre in Chatham. Over thirty delegates travelled from Medway, Kent, Essex and London to participate in what we anticipate will be a regular event, where colleagues can network with fellow professionals and benefit from relevant inputs from a range of speakers.

At Monday’s event Kath Wright presented an overview of the progress the CDI has made as the overarching body for careers development in the United Kingdom following the Government’s dictate than the profession needed to speak with one voice. Membership has reached the 4000 mark and the professional register continues to grow, offering purchasers of careers guidance a choice of qualified careers advisers. The number and range of relevant qualifications for membership of the CDI and inclusion on the professional register have increased in order that the whole guidance community is represented at the Institute. Kath also highlighted the purpose and scope of the Employability Passport being developed by the CDI.

Rose Carter outlined the range of services provided by TrustCareers across Medway, Kent and East Sussex and touched on the challenges provided by the current purchaser/provider model favoured by the present government.  Dr. Sally Anne Barnes from the University of Warwick Institute of Employment Research presented an overview of the sources of Labour Market Information and the challenges of presenting this to young people and adults through Labour Market Intelligence. It is clear that LMI is an important factor in career choice but using data in a meaningful way is a challenge to advisers.

The Southern Educational Leadership Trust [SELT], an organisation well versed in providing inputs to schools and other education providers on motivation and leadership, are developing their portfolio of services to include presentations to young people aimed at increasing their self awareness and self esteem. This would support young people in their applications to employment or university. The offer is made as a group session and further details can be obtained through the SELT website.

Alison Fielding from Canterbury Christchurch University told us that they continue to offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate careers qualifications relevant to careers guidance practitioners and careers staff within schools. The MA in Careers Management now incorporates the Qualification in Careers Guidance [QCG].

Prospects were unable to attend but kindly sent along a sample of their current careers resources for delegates to peruse. It was interesting see the re-emergence of the weighty tome that is Occupations, now even weightier with 750 job profiles.

SELT have offered to host the next South East meeting so it is to be hoped that this successful first event with be replicated in the not too distant future.
