As part of our NCS programme, we are taking part in a social action project. To do this we will be fundraising and contributing packs full of essentials that homeless people are in need of. We are working with the One Big Family charity which is 'a small, dedicated charity, supporting homeless and vulnerably-housed people in Kent, London and Yorkshire.' They provide food, drink, clothing, toiletries and other vital items to those in need via regular outreach work and soup kitchens. They provide food parcels for the local community, starter kits and essential packs for newly housed people who may need them. In 2017 they won the 'Pride in Medway' award and have been nominated again this year. They regularly get around 15/20 rough sleepers a night and keep doors open when the temperature feels like 0 degrees or below.
As a group we decided on this charity as we noticed that the issue of homelessness is a big concern in Medway. This concern was enhanced when hearing the shocking statistics surrounding homelessness; since 2010, the number of people sleeping rough in the UK has increased by 269% now with roughly 4,751 sleeping rough. It is also estimated that every 1 in 200 are living in inadequate housing. In Medway, 1,059 people are homeless of living in inadequate housing which highlights the extent of the issue locally.
By the end of the project we hope to have made a difference in the Medway community by aiding those who are less fortunate. So, please donate whatever you can to this cause and help to make a difference in Medway.
